Sisters and Brothers,
We know that the real strength of any Union is derived from its members, and creating opportunites for the rank-and-file to actively participate in the life of their Union is essential to build a fighting Union. That is why we are so excited about the current events around your Union ...
Probably the best way to get involved in our member-run Union, is through attending its regular Council Meetings. This is where Local Leaders meet and make the decisions that shape the future of the CILU/CIPU. The next Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday May 12th, 2005 at 4:30 PM at the Glastonbury High School. Make sure that your local is represented ! You can RSVP to Deb Brigada via email !
As municipal employees, being politically active and letting our elected representatives know where we stand on their decisions and policies is one of the most important things that we do. The CILU/CIPU and UE "Political Action Day" on March 23rd at the Capitol in Hartford is a unique way for us to meet our legislators and show our Solidarity in fighting for legislation that advances the interests of all public employees. Click here for a flyer about the event and share it with your members and co-workers !
Our regular Dispatcher Forums have become a great way to get involved and help shape the working conditions for these professionals. The next sessions are scheduled for 3/31/05 and 4/14/05 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the union offices ... email us for more details ! Join us and meet with your fellow dispatchers from around the state ... we learn something from each other at every meeting !
BOE Paraprofessionals are having a particularly difficult time lately, facing longer hours, cuts in benefits and an increasing work load due to the unfunded mandates of the "No Child Left Behind" legislation. It is disgraceful that those who are the backbone of our schools, and devote so much of themselves to educating our children, are treated this way. How do we fight back ? Let's find out at our Paraprofessional Conference on April 5th, 2005 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Get a flyer now and share it with your fellow educators who are also frustrated and want to learn how to change things !
All authority of the CILU/CIPU is empowered at our Convention, scheduled this year for June 4th at the Hilton Garden Inn in Glastonbury. Your Local has already received information on registering its Delegates, making nominations for office, and proposing resolutions and amendents to the Constitution. This may be the single most important event for members to be a part of, so be sure that your Local is represented !
These are only a few of the ways you and your co-workers can become involved in the life of your Union, and more events are being planned all the time. Please forward this message to your fellow members, and encourage them to participate. They can also visit our web site at www.cilu.org for more information.
