The combined resources of the CILU/CIPU and the UE are completely committed and dedicated to preserving and promoting democratic rank-and-file independent trade Unionism.
Our rank-and-file have always demanded Member to staff ratios of no more than 500 to 1 (one staff person for every 500 Members). Our affiliation with UE provides us with 1 full-time direct service staff person for every 450 Members, and including our support staff reduces this ratio even further.
And don't forget, The Members Run This Union, and the elected Officers you see below are not just "figureheads" as in many other Unions ... they take an active and involved role in helping your local and its Members ... our Officers work closely with our full-time paid staff and are always available to help you.

With over 30 years of experience in Accounting, Inventory Control and Customer Service, Janie manages the financial operations and business service activities of UE Local 222-CILU/CIPU. As a ten year veteran of CILU/CIPU, she works closely with the elected Union Finance Committee to guarantee Member control of our dues revenue, and manages a Member approved budget in the high six figures. If any of our Members have any questions at all, about anything regarding our dues revenue and expenses, Janie is committed to full accountability, transparency and disclosure and will work with individual members and their locals on any financial issues.

Office Manager
Deborah Brigada
The longest serving employee of CILU/CIPU, Deb was hired in 1992 - only months after our first Local was organized. As the CILU/CIPU Office Manager, Deb has wide ranging responsibility for managing special events and projects, coordination of organizing efforts, creation of Union literature, and also serves as the CILU/CIPU Training Coordinator and its Member Benefits Director. Integral to the operation of our Union, Deb acts as a liaision between UE Local 222-CILU/CIPU Members and Staff, and provides administrative support to our Elected Officials, International and Staff Representatives, and Field Organizers.

President UE Northeast Region
Peter Knowlton
Currently the President of the UE Northeast Region, Brother Knowlton has spent over 25 years in the service of his fellow workers. Peter is a Vice-President on the General Executive Board of the UE National, and has also worked as a UE Staff Member responsible for organizing, handling grievances, complex arbitrations and working with Locals in contract and pension negotiations.

Our Union at Sargent Lock in New Haven has been in UE for over 60 years. Before we organized into UE this was a sweatshop - one of the lowest paying shops in the area. Since we organized with UE, we've made this into one of the best paying shops around. In UE, we believe in Solidarity and supporting each other.
Our Union is committed to proecting and further advancing the gains of working people both at our workplace and in public employment. I have had the pleasure of meeting a number of you and look forward to meeting others and working together with our Brothers and Sisters in CILU/CIPU to build a great future for independent unions in Connecticut.

UE Education Director / International Rep
Carol Lambiase
A 25 year veteran of servicing and organizing the Rank-and-File, Carol Lambiase is the UE Education Director and International Representative coordinating outreach to Independent Unions. She has developed numerous workshops and training programs used at the district and local levels. Based in Connecticut, she continues to function as a member of the UE National Office Staff. She was an integral part of developing the ground-breaking solidarity pact between UE and CILU/CIPU, and continues to coordinate the militant struggles of the newly affiliated UE Local 222-CILU/CIPU to revitalize the labor movement in the state of Connecticut.

Cathy Granoth
One of our own, Cathy was a Dispatcher and active Union Member in Hamden where she served as Local President and Negotiating Committee Member. She was also a CILU/CIPU Council Officer and Delegate prior to becoming an employee of the CILU/CIPU, where she has proven to be an experienced and successful organizer. Combining her negotiations and problem solving skills with her life-long Union background allows for a unique understanding of all facets of representation and leadership.

I joined the labor movement in 1968 as a high school student working 30 hours per week. While working the night shift to pay for college (Cornell), I was elected to my first union negotiating committee.
In the late 1970's, I worked with the UFWA (United Farmworkers of America), and I joined the UE in 1979. In almost thirty years with the UE, I have worked in every district, and was elected to six terms as the President of UE District 6. Most recently, I have relocated to the Northeast Region of the UE, where I am working closely with the members of UE Local 222-CILU/CIPU.

Gene Elk
Gene Elk has been with UE since 1977; he was assigned to western Pennsylvania as a field organizer in 1978. Among other duties, he serviced UE Local 610 and worked with the local during the historic anti-concession strike of 1981-1982. In 1988 he joined the UE National Office as an International Representative assigned to coordinate organizing in the GE chain. He has since taken on the responsibility for public-sector organizing and servicing in UE District One.

UE - Political Action Director
Chris Townsend
As many UE Members know, Chris Townsend doesn't actually work out of the national office, but he does function as part of the national union staff as Political Action Director. Formerly a field organizer who worked in UE District Two and on GE organizing, Townsend has staffed UE's Washington, D.C. office since 1993. He coordinates UE's political action work, prepares bulletins, leaflets, on-line updates, organizes national conferences and meets frequently with district and local leaders.
